HUMAK University of Applied Sciences offers new courses in cultural management and organisational change regarding sustainability values. We call it COSM, and it’s an acronym that stands for Culture, Organisation and Sustainability Management. It’s the integrated learning area to explore sustainability values with cultural managers and cultural producers (MA, BA students, alumni, practitioners).

COSM Talks is a series of online events organized by Humak University of Applied Sciences in Finland with scientists, teachers and experts exploring in conversations the area of the current and future content and methods of sustainability values-oriented cultural management. That session’s focus in cultural organisation as a pillar of healthy democracy. The event is open to the general audience, but especially directed to cultural professionals, cultural management adepts, alumni, and teachers. The focus of our Talks are sustainability values and their organisational and individual applications in cultural, creative, arts and heritage activities area.

The aim of the conversation is to discuss the role of cultural organisations and cultural managers as pillars of healthy, liberal democracy. We use the concept of “healthy democracy” to describe our aim because we envision liberal democracy as a dynamic, living system that sustains human society and is sustained by it, in turn. Our overarching question is how we can foster and maintain healthy and sustainable societies built on thriving democratic systems.

How can arts and culture help a healthy democracy resist external forces that push a society toward illiberalism, populism, and autocratic rule?

What specific role do arts and culture organisations and cultural producers play. How they sustain against illiberal political tensions?

What is the way arts and culture systems can be used to disseminate and validate democratic principles and values?

How can they foster and strengthen healthy, democratic dialogue and promote citizen participation, especially in a way that provides for citizen action and oversight of educational, policy, organizational, institutional, legal, and media systems?

What are the key components of reciprocity between arts/culture and these other systems? Can they be duplicated across local communities, regions, and nations?

These questions form the field of practice we would like to address in our COSM Talk organized by Humak University of Applied Sciences on the 9th of December 2021 as the open online session with international academics: Constance DeVereaux (University of Connecticut), Tal Feder (Israel Institute of Technology) and Mariano Martin Zamorano (University of Barcelona). Pekka Vartiainen and Marcin Poprawski will be hosts and moderators of the discussion.
